Friendsville was the second town to ban fracking in Maryland (after Mountain Lake Park) and the first to ban water withdrawls.
Friendsville’s Source Water Protection Plan won the 2015 Source Water Protection Plan of The Year from Maryland Rural Water Association. This plan helped lay the groundwork for the municipal fracking and water withdrawl ban. Friendsville has a town sub committee called FREE, Friendsville Renewable Energy Effort, which seeks to make Friendsville a leader and example of the use of multiple power sources for community produced clean energy including wind, hydro and solar.
Friendsville is Garrett County’s oldest settlement and was founded in 1763.
